Cape to Cape MTB is proud to partner with Leave No Trace.
The mission of Leave No Trace (LNT) is to promote and inspire responsible travel and outdoor recreation through education, research and partnerships. LNT seeks only to educate Australian public and visitors to Australia on how and why to minimise their impacts while enjoying natural and cultural heritage areas.
The LNT program's effectiveness lies in its broad base of support from all outdoor enthusiasts – from federal and state land managers to individual citizens, non-profits to corporate manufacturers, community groups to retail shops. LNT strives to offer a consistent message to all visitors in a variety of locations. Hopefully, visitors who receive the LNT message will learn and practice Leave No Trace ethics.
Australia's South West
The South West Eco Region of Western Australia has been recognised by Conservation International as one of the world’s 34 biodiversity hotspots due to its unique and abundant variety of species, many of them endemic and threatened.
It is currently under siege by a number of threatening processes. The most serious, to which almost half of Australian flora species are susceptible, is Phytophthora cinnamomi (Phytophthora dieback) – a soil-borne organism causing root-rot disease. It has been found occurring across five Natural Resource Management (NRM) regions in Western Australia, from Eneabba to Esperance.
Phytophthora dieback spreads through the transference of affected soil and invades plant roots and stems. By invading through the root, it virtually goes unnoticed until dead foliage is seen. It is an aggressive threat and a huge problem in the South West and the South Coast area. The vegetation loss is a major distress to the plant biodiversity of the area. It also destroys the unique habitat critical to many mammal and bird species.
We spread dieback by transporting mud in our boots, tyre treads and other gear. Some places have already been severely impacted. The South West Eco Region, with its globally-significant range and number of unique and endemic species, relies on our stewardship to maintain, and hopefully restore, its health.
It is critical that individuals and groups who ride mountain bikes in the South West adhere to the seven Leave No Trace Principles that apply to mountain bike riding.
Help protect the environment you ride in, so we can continue to enjoy our wilderness tomorrow and into the future.
